Ascension Cathedral
Address: Red Square, 1
Voznesensky Cathedral, a real pearl not only of Elets, but also of the whole Russia.
Ascension Cathedral was laid on August 22, 1845, and its height with the cross reaches 74 meters! The temple is made in the style of Russian and Byzantine architecture, decorated with a three-tier iconostasis of gilded wood and marble mosaics. Inside the cathedral there are paintings created by talented artists Lebedev and Korzukhin, which leave an unforgettable impression.
On the territory of the cathedral there is the Chapel in the name of the Ascension of the Lord, a monument to the citizens of Yelch who died in the battle with Tamerlane in 1395. This unusual monument in the form of an Old Russian helmet still preserves its pristine appearance, reminding of an important historical milestone.
And the best thing is that from the windows of the Grand Elets Hotel you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the cathedral as if it were at arm's length!
The Trade Street of Elets is a place where history literally peeks through the windows.
The most lively and conspicuous street of the city was formed in the XIX century, when local merchants, not being stingy, built their luxurious mansions here. They immediately gave the lower floors for stores and stores - trade was a serious business. This is how the street appeared, where every meter breathed business excitement and merchant's scope.
Today Trade Street is a naturally formed architectural ensemble, which has preserved the spirit of the old city. Mansions with carved platbands, ancient shops and modern cafes cozily coexist here. Walking along it, it is easy to imagine how a hundred years ago trade was boiling here, deals were made, and shop windows beckoned buyers with their riches.
Do you want to feel the rhythm of merchant Elets? Then you are definitely here. The Trade Street is still the center of city life - only now the souvenirs here are not honey barrels, but photo cards and impressions that you will take away with you.
Lenin Square in Elets is a place where every stone keeps the echo of centuries.
Back in the XVIII century, according to the general plan of 1770, the heart of the city was born here. In those days the square was called Arkhangelskaya Square and was a real merchant anthill: fish rows, stores, stores - trade was boiling, haggling and bargaining.
But the city grows, and symbols change with it. In the spring of 1935 the square was transformed thanks to the efforts of Yeletsky Komsomol members, and in the fall of the same year, by the 18th anniversary of the October Revolution, in the center installed a monument to Lenin. From that moment the square acquired a new name, which it bears to this day.
Today Lenin Square is not just a geographical point, but a place where the past meets the present. Here city holidays are held, residents gather to celebrate important dates, or just take a leisurely stroll, feeling the pulse of ancient Elets.
If you are in the city, don't forget to take a photo, because this is where the history of everyone who gets acquainted with Elets for the first time begins.
Address: corner of Sverdlova and Sovetskaya Streets
Yeletsky chimes - a symbol of time and harmony.
At the corner of Sverdlova and Sovetskaya Streets, on the site of the former water tower, are the Yeletsky Chimes - one of the most recognizable landmarks of the city!
The architectural forms of the tower and the skillful masonry of the brick walls of the 1970s became the basis for the installation of the main clock of Yelets on it. The clock with a 4-sided dial and a chime immediately attracted the attention of the townspeople.
In November 1975, the citizens of Yeltsin heard its melodious chime for the first time, which has since become an integral part of the city, reminding of the importance of every minute and creating a unique atmosphere.
The Church of the Assumption in Elets is a temple in which the spirit of Victory is frozen.
This architectural masterpiece of the era of high classicism was erected as a monument to the triumph of the Russian people in the Patriotic War of 1812. Yelets did not stand aside from the great history, and the Church of the Assumption became a symbol of gratitude and strength embodied in stone.
Empire forms, strict lines and monumental size speak for themselves: the temple reminds us of the glorious pages of the past and the greatness of the people's feat. Historians are sure that the author of the project belonged to the pleiad of outstanding capital architects of the school of Charlemagne and Rusko.
Walking along the ancient streets of Elets, it is impossible to pass by this temple - it is like a magnet that attracts the eye with its austere beauty and special atmosphere of peace.
Temple of the Eletskaya Icon of the Mother of God (the only one in Orthodoxy)
Address: 26, Oktyabrskaya str.
The temple of Our Lady of Elets is young among the ancient ones, but with a fate full of trials.
This temple was the last Orthodox church built in Elets in pre-revolutionary times. Its walls grew from 1893 to 1915, becoming a reminder of the former prosperity of the merchant town and the deep faith of its inhabitants.
But the 20th century was not too favorable: in 1923 the church was closed. For almost 70 years its doors were locked, and only in 1989 the shrine returned to its true owners - the believers of Yeltsin. The first service after a long break took place here in 1991.
Modest and majestic at the same time, the Temple of Our Lady of Yeletsk today is not just a place of prayer, but a symbol of the steadfastness of the spirit, living history and faith that has not been broken by the decades.
Vvedenskaya Church is the heart of ancient Yelets.
The oldest among the temples of the city, it remembers the times when Elets was still defended by a fortress and the Bystraya Sosna was making noise on its slopes. The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built next to the cemetery - and since then this place has always been considered special, filled with grace.
This church has not just survived the centuries, it has left a trace even in Russian literature. The great Ivan Alexeyevich Bunin mentioned Vvedensky church in his works many times - as a symbol of the elusive but eternal.
When you stand at its walls, it seems that you hear the breath of antiquity. There is silence here, filled with meaning, and a history that lives in every stone.
“Returning home”: a monument to Ivan Alexeyevich Bunin.
He left Elets for the world of great literature, became the first Russian Nobel laureate, but mentally he always returned to his native streets, where “The Late Hour” became eternity.
In 1995, on the 125th anniversary of Bunin's birth, Yelets returned this debt of memory to him. On Sverdlov Street, in front of the fountain, appeared a bronze Bunin - pensive, slightly tired, sitting on a bench in reflection on the lived and written. Sculptor Yuri Grishko managed to catch this moment of silence and depth, in which everyone can see his own Bunin.
They say that if you sit down next to him and think about your own for a minute, he will “prompt” the right words. After all, this monument is not just a monument to a great writer - it is a meeting with the city he loved.
Museum of Military Glory: History in Faces and Fates.
When you pass by the old building of the former State Bank of 1914 in the center of Elets, it is hard to guess that behind its doors there is a living breath of history. Here, in the Museum of Military Glory, every echo of footsteps sounds like a reminder of the feat.
Since May 9, 2020 the museum has opened its doors for everyone who wants to pass the way from the XIV century to our days together with the heroes, defenders, people who did not allow to erase Yelets from the map of history.
The exposition “900 Years of Service to the Fatherland” is not just an exhibition, it is a journey through the iconic epochs, where each showcase tells about battles, victories and names worth remembering.
The hall of war chronicles literally takes you back to 1941 - here, in liberated Yelets, where the footage of long-awaited freedom was frozen on film. And the hall of temporary exhibitions and the hall “Not everything is written about the war” will remind you that the history continues and it still has many pages.
And every year the museum is replenished with new exhibits, preserving the memory for future generations.
Immerse yourself in the “golden age” of merchant Elets.
In the very heart of the city stands a house whose walls remember the glitter of ballroom evenings, the ringing of samovars and the rustle of merchant account books. This is the Museum of Merchants and estates - a real portal to the past.
Once carriages passed through the majestic arches here, and behind the manor there was a botanical garden. Today you can stroll down the ancient staircases, walk on parquet floors, touch carved doors and tiled stoves that breathe history.
The exposition of the museum covers more than a century of history, telling about the life of merchant families, their traditions, life and leisure. Hunting trophies, old books, mirrors in the boudoirs, musical instruments in the living room and even the servants' room with a “black” staircase - every detail conveys the spirit of that era.
Even if you have never been interested in pre-revolutionary Russia, you will not be able to stay indifferent here. The atmosphere of the “golden age” of provincial Elets will draw you in like an old novel, and you will leave here with the feeling that you have lived one day in the life of a Yeletsky merchant.
Be sure to visit this corner of history - the impressions will be unforgettable.
Where crafts come to life: Yelts Museum of Folk Crafts.
Do you want to see with your own eyes how ordinary straw makes real works of art, and birch bark turns into elegant caskets? Welcome to the Museum of Folk Crafts and Crafts of Yelets - a place where traditions are not just kept, but continue to live and surprise!
In the cozy halls of the museum you are waiting for a real journey through the craft workshops of the past: wooden carving, pottery, embroidery, weaving and even blacksmithing and cooperage. Here you can not only look at, but really feel the spirit of craftsmanship, which for centuries has created the image of Elets as a city of masters.
Special attention is paid to the works of Yeltsin craftsmen, who were famous for products made of vine, birch bark and natural materials. These crafts were passed down from generation to generation, and now you can not only see them, but also learn to create your own masterpieces at master classes.
Each exposition is a piece of history, and temporary exhibitions and interactive programs make the museum a place you want to return to again and again.
Come, be inspired and discover the real soul of Yeletsky craft.
The house where memories are born: Ivan Alexeevich Bunin Museum in Elets.
In the very heart of old Elets, among cozy streets with historical breath, stands a wooden house where the lines of the great writer sound. This is the only memorial museum of I.A. Bunin in Russia, which opened its doors in 1988.
It was here, in the house of Anna Osipovna Rostovtseva, that the future Nobel laureate spent his grammar school years. Three years that were forever absorbed into the walls of this house, becoming its living memory. The layout of the rooms has been preserved from Bunin's times - when you come here, it is as if you get into the past, where every corner is filled with the atmosphere of those “Bunin's” years.
The exposition of the museum does not just tell about the writer's life - it lives together with his characters, his thoughts, his love for his native land. Here it becomes clear why Yelets so often appears in his works and why, after years of emigration, Bunin returned here in his thoughts.
This is the place where words take shape and the silence of the house whispers about the great writer.
Home, where the music of the soul is born: T.N. Khrennikov Museum in Yelets.
“For me the holiest place on earth is my native and favorite town of Yelets”, - said Tikhon Nikolaevich Khrennikov. It was here that the history of the great composer, whose melodies became the voice of the era, began. And here, on his native street, on September 10, 2000 the first in the country house-museum of T.N. Khrennikov was opened.
The museum became a living memory of the man for whom Yelets was not just a point on the map, but a source of inspiration, his first love and the place of his first musical discoveries. The exposition, created with the composer's personal participation, still preserves the very atmosphere where his first compositions were born and the desire to write music for his people matured.
The museum contains unique items: manuscripts, scores, photographs, gramophone records and even personal belongings of the master. These are not just exhibits - they are pieces of living history, conveying the character, strength and tenderness of Khrennikov's music.
Every corner here is filled with the melody that sounds in the heart of every citizen of Yeltsin.
The house where memory lives: the museum of artist Nikolai Zhukov in Yelets.
In a small wooden house on Yeletskaya street, among ancient staircases and creaking floorboards, the “core of life” of one of the greatest artists of the XX century - Nikolai Nikolayevich Zhukov is kept. Here passed his childhood and youth, here was born a love for art, which later brought him fame People's Artist of the USSR and winner of State Prizes.
It was in this house, as Zhukov himself dreamed, that the only Russian House-Museum of Nikolai Zhukov was opened in 1992. His family gave here an invaluable collection of personal belongings, family relics and, most importantly, authentic works of the master.
In the memorial room you can look into the past: photos, documents, household items - everything reminds about the difficult but light-filled life of the artist. The exposition devoted to the Great Patriotic War occupies a special place: Zhukov not only painted portraits of heroes, but also kept in his works the soul of the country, its pain, hope and love.
His warm, heartfelt drawings on the theme of family and childhood, as well as sketches from foreign trips make the museum alive, touching and incredibly human.
The Zhukov House-Museum is not just an exhibition, it is a place where the breath of the era resounds and the memory of the man for whom Yelets was the beginning of everything is preserved.
Fine art in every pattern: The House-Museum of Yeletsky Lace.
There is a place in Elets where time seems to slow down, giving an opportunity to look at every delicate thread, every curl woven by the hands of craftswomen. This is the House-Museum of Yeletsk lace and artist Pavel Vasilyevich Bludnov.
Here, on two floors of the cozy house, there is a whole universe of lace beauty: panels, tablecloths, dresses, blousons, in which the history, traditions and soul of Yeletsk lacewomen are intertwined. Each product is not just a textile, it is a small work of art, which shows the handwriting of craftswomen who passed their secrets from generation to generation.
The special atmosphere of the museum is given by the connection with the name of Moscow artist Pavel Bludnov, who not only immortalized Yeletsky lace in his works, but also became the keeper of this unique tradition.
At any time of the year, on any day, the museum gladly welcomes guests. There are both group and individual excursions, where you will be told about the centuries-old traditions of Yeletsky lace and shown the products that are impossible to take your eyes off.
Complex of the Church of St. Michael of Tver and Alexander Nevsky Princes
Address: 88, Sovetskaya str.
The Temple of the Three Princes: a place where history and memory are woven together.
At first glance, this temple complex looks like a corner of silence in the heart of the city. But behind its walls there is a whole chronicle, in which the fates of great princes, emperors and ordinary citizens of Yelch are united.
The Church of the Holy Princes Michael of Tver and Alexander Nevsky consists of three significant objects: - Chapel in memory of Emperor Alexander II - as a symbol of gratitude for the abolition of serfdom. - Church with a crystal cross, laid in honor of the visit of Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich - brother of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II - to Elets on October 2, 1909. - The House of Prizreniye (orphanage), which once sheltered the needy and destitute.
Everything here reminds of the great events of the early XX century and the people whose fate is inextricably linked with the history of Russia. The crystal cross of the church has become a symbol of purity of faith and memory, and the ancient walls keep the silence of prayers and gratitude of generations.
Today the church is not just an architectural monument, but also the spiritual heart of the city, where people come to remember their roots, traditions and those who lived for the sake of others.
Yelts city park is a place where time slows down and memories become eternal.
There is a corner in Elets where the past meets the present, where Bunin's epoch lives next to our days. This is the City Park of Culture and Recreation, the heart of the city, where the citizens of Elets have been walking for more than a hundred years.
In these alleys once walked young gymnasium students Ivan Bunin and Mikhail Prishvin. There is a stone grotto with a gazebo and an ancient cast-iron fountain of the late XIX century, created at the iron foundry of merchant P.I. Rostovtsev. And the “Grotto” with a reservoir in the shape of the Black Sea is the fantasy of another Yeletsk merchant, A.N. Zausailov, who embodied his dream of southern shores in the architecture of his native town.
Today the park occupies the territory of 3.2 hectares, uniting the former City Garden, Botanical Garden of Zausailov's estate and adjacent lands. This place has always remained not just a recreation area, but also a place where the taste for beauty, love for nature and for the native city are formed.
For many residents of Yeltsin the City Park is a memory of childhood: Sunday walks with parents, the first ride on the carousel, long summer evenings under the shade of ancient trees. And this connection of generations, like a thread, stretches through the decades, turning an ordinary walk into a small return home.
The park lives and changes, but it always remains a place where you want to come back to relax from the hustle and bustle, remember important things and simply enjoy the atmosphere of leisurely, kind Elets.
Yelts Children's Park is a place where history meets childhood.
Today, it is a quiet corner for family walks, but a hundred years ago it was a very different story. The Children's Park, which the citizens of Yeltsin lovingly call simply “Children's”, began as a garden at the orphanage for girls, founded on the funds of the Kalabin merchants.
In 1875 on the second floor of the orphanage opened a house church in the name of the Holy Trinity. It was in this church, in May 1881, that the famous Russian philosopher Vasily Rozanov and Varvara Butyagina were secretly married. And in the 1920s, the building of the orphanage church was demolished, but the memory of it still hangs in the air of the old garden.
During the Great Patriotic War the Orel Suvorov School was located here. Future officers were marching on the park square, which served as a training ground for them. It was then that the territory of the Children's Park was filled with the spirit of military discipline and camaraderie.
And in 1947 the park found a new face - it was restored and equipped by the pioneers and Komsomol members of Elets. Since then this place has become a symbol of youth, friendship and love for the native city.
Today the Children's Park is a cozy alleys filled with children's laughter and sunlight, a place where the past becomes a part of the walk, and every corner keeps a special atmosphere of calm and warmth.
